STEVE MAIR

STEVE MAIR
1959 ~ 2026

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Steve Mair announce his passing on Sunday, September 13, 2026, at the age of 67.

Steve was the beloved husband of Brenda Mair, with whom he shared 35 years of marriage, beginning in 1991. He was a loving father to Josh Mair and stepfather to Ashley Porter and Andrea Freeman; father-in-law to Justin Porter, Brandon Freeman and Stephanie Horsman; and a cherished Grandpa to Ava Porter, Evan Mair and Ella Mair. Dear son of Gloria and Richard Mair and brother to David Mair and Holly Mair. Steve will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.

A teacher for 25 years and a carpenter for many years, Steve shared his knowledge and skills through his work and service to others. He generously gave his time as a volunteer with Harvest Share, helping support his community. An avid reader who loved to travel, Steve found enjoyment in both the pages of a book and the opportunity to explore somewhere new.

Above all, Steve will be remembered as a loving husband, father, stepfather and grandfather. His memory will live on in the stories his loved ones share and the moments they will always hold close.

We weren’t ready for your life to become a memory. There was still so much ordinary living left to do… another conversation, another laugh, another day we thought we had.

Now our love reaches for you
in all the familiar places.
It reaches for the phone.
It waits for your voice.
It finds you in the smallest things
and breaks our hearts all over again.

Today, we have to speak of you in the past tense,
and every word feels wrong.

You were.
You loved.
You lived.

But we love you now.
We need you now.

And somewhere in the middle of an ordinary day,
we will forget for half a second
and think, “I have to tell you this.”

Then we will remember.

We will learn, again and again,
how to carry the things
we only ever wanted to share with you.

We will keep living,
but there will always be moments
when all we want
is one more moment with you.

A Celebration of Steve’s Life will take place on Saturday, October 10th from 12:00 – 4:00 P.M. at the Parry Sound Golf and Country Club. In honour of Steve, please dress casually in a Hawaiian shirt and Durag, and bring your funniest stories to share.

As expressions of sympathy, donations to the West Parry Sound Health Centre would be appreciated.

You may send your donation directly through the charity’s web-site, or if you require assistance with your donation, please call us at 705-746-5855 Monday to Friday during regular office hours.

I personally did not know Mr. Mair; however my son had him as a carpenter teacher.
Mr. Mair taught him so much and to this day he often talks about what a great teacher he was, and has turned into an awesome carpenter thanks to Mr. Mair.
Our condolences to Mr. Mair’s friends and family.
He was a super teacher and person!

Sad to hear of the passing of Mr. Mair. Time spent in his wood shop classes are some of my fondest memories at PSHS and enjoyed seeing him at Home Hardware after I graduated.
I still have some of the projects he helped me build back then in my home today.
Condolences to the entire Mair family.

-Eric Carruthers

Very sorry for your loss, Josh and family.
I will always remember Mr. Mair always opening up the home on Highway 518 whenever we got cold from sliding down the hill behind the home that led to the McGill residence.
I wish all of you are able to have some recollection of the happiest moments that you have spent with loved ones.

-Travis Nason

We are sad that Steve is no longer with us. Steve was a beautiful person; kind and interested in everyone’s life. Quick to lend a hand, fix an item or build a needed coat rack.
Peter and I volunteered with Steve on Wednesday mornings at Harvest Share. Steve will be sorely missed.
May his family find solace with his memory.
Our condolences.

Dear Brenda and Family,
My deepest condolences to all of you, from me and the entire McDougall family.
Steve, better known to me as Mr. Mair, or Mair, made a tremendous impact on me during my high school years. As someone many would have considered an unfocused and undisciplined student, I will always remember how he found a way to connect with me and bring out my best. He not only helped me become more dedicated to his class but also encouraged me to apply myself in other areas of my academics and life.
Whenever I lost focus or stopped paying attention in his class, he would jingle his keys in the air and call out, “McDougall, over here!” It still makes me laugh when I think about it.
Mr. Mair had a unique ability to give students the respect they needed by treating them like adults and friends. Because of that, even students who were struggling or considered difficult wanted to show up, participate in his class and dedicate themselves to the school activities he organized.
He also coached our school hockey team for years during my high school career. He gave so much of himself to others and always wanted to see the very best come out of each of us. He never judged a book by its cover and gave everyone a fair chance. Some even multiple chances!
I will always carry these memories with me. I hope that one day I will be remembered for making the same kind of positive impact on others’ lives that Mr. Mair made on mine.

I was saddened by hearing the news of Steves’ passing. As I was an electrician for the school board for a number of years, I spent lots of time in Steves’ classroom doing repairs on the different machines. We had many laughs together. My wife and I also had Steve, and his carpenter partner do a renovation at our house when we lived in Parry Sound before he was a teacher. My condolences to friends and family.

-Gary Kennedy

Dear Brenda… you are a great neighbour and friend. We will miss Steve for sure. Having read all the messages and your lovely obituary, we are reminded of what a great community we live in. Steve was a community booster and supporter for sure! Take care.

Stevie, you will always be our friend. Growing up with you and spending our teenage years, we will never forget. Camping, drive-inns, playing ball and hanging out with you. I learned on your passing coming from visiting with Terry B, on the Island and was shocked. My friend, too soon, I am saddened.
