Peter went home to be with his Lord and Saviour on Sunday, July 5th, 2026 at the West Parry Sound Health Centre. Age 83 years.

Beloved son of the late Clayton and Sylvia Hurlbut. Cherished Dad of Lisa Hurlbut, Rebecca Kaiser, and the late Gavin Hurlbut. Loving Papa to Ashley and Kyle Buttineau, and Vanessa Hurlbut; Aeron and Anya Fox; and Rosemary and Abigail Kaiser. Fondly remembered by his good friend and former wife, Danielle. Dear brother of Myrtle, Ian (the late Grace), and the late Hope. Fondly remembered by his nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends, colleagues, and by his cousin Jan Boulard.

Peter always considered the Parry Sound area to be home, even though he lived in many other locations over his lifetime, and he was always eager to leave urban areas and return to the beautiful rocks, trees, and lakes of Seguin Township. He shared his house for many years with his daughter Lisa and her children, and his impact in their lives is immeasurable. He later welcomed Gavin’s children, Aeron and Anya Fox into the extended family. Peter also delighted in his visits with Rebecca’s family each time they travelled from Illinois. Always ready at hand was his stack of Peterson’s Nature Field Guides to identify insects, birds, trees, flowers, and other flora and fauna with hischildren and grandchildren. Observing the visitors to his birdfeeders was a constant interest for him, although he often felt the need to chase away marauding squirrels! Over the years, he walked innumerable miles, flanked by his faithful canine companion, always alert to the sights and sounds of songbirds. He loved to be outdoors in God’s creation.

After graduating from the University of Waterloo, Peter spent most of his adult life in education, first teaching high school Geography and then elementary French, with a brief hiatus in real estate. A highlight of his elementary teaching career with the Near North District School Board was coaching students on an extra-curricular chessteam. After retiring for the third time from the public school system, he relished teaching French at Otter Lake Mennonite Christian School, and delighted in creating curriculum resources incorporating his passion for geography. After his fourth retirement, he pursued additional university credits exemplifying his lifelong interest in learning. He greatly appreciated proper use of grammar in spoken language, and his love for the correct use of the English language led to many enjoyable hours of proofreading and editing. A love for music in a myriad of forms was woven through the fabric of Peter’s life, including learning to play guitar on his own, singing and playing folk music in his university years, coaching folk music singing to his high school students, singing in and directing several choirs, composing and arranging music, attending Festival of the Sound concerts, and playing clarinet in the Georgian Bay Winds. It was deeply meaningful to him to sing sacred choral music to the glory of God with the Parry Sound Choral Collective right up to the end of his life. Peter’s faith in the Lord Jesus Christ was central to his life. He appreciated the loving spiritual family that surrounded him at the Gospel Hall, and he desired to be where the Word of God, the Bible, was taught plainly and valued deeply.

The family would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the many members of Peter’s caregiving team: Dr. Josh Hamby, the Palliative Care team at WPSHC, Serenity Place staff, True North Nursing and Home Care, Community EMS, Lisa Morwald, his PSW’s, and the many friends at the Gospel Hall who supported and cared for Peter so graciously and compassionately.

Resting at the Logan Funeral Home, where friends will be received on Wednesday, July 8th from 4:00 – 7:00 P.M. and on Thursday, July 9th from 12:00 – 1:00 P.M.

Funeral Service will take place in the Logan Memorial Chapel on Thursday, July 9th at 1:00 P.M.

Interment Humphrey Conger Union Cemetery.
