PEARL YAUK
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Pearl Cecilia Yauk (née Holland), who left us peacefully on Saturday, June 13th, 2026, to reunite with her beloved husband, Leonard Yauk. Pearl was an exceptional teacher, a cherished friend, a devoted daughter and sister, a loving and supportive wife, a proud grandmother, and, to her children, simply the most wonderful mother imaginable. Her kindness, strength, generosity, and unwavering love touched countless lives and will remain her enduring legacy.
Born and raised in Windsor, Ontario, in 1933, Pearl was the last surviving Holland sister, predeceased by her siblings Mary Holland, Teresa Picard, and Blanche Tellerd, as well as by her parents, John and Janie Holland.
Pearl attended Assumption University, affiliated with the University of Windsor, where she earned her bachelor’s degree and began her journey toward a career as a high school English teacher. Always eager for adventure, she travelled far north to begin her teaching career at Red Rock-Nipigon High School. It was there that she met her soulmate and future husband, Len. Together, they formed an extraordinary partnership—not only as educators, but also as coaches, community leaders, dedicated volunteers, and, most importantly, loving parents.
Pearl and Len began their married life in Sudbury, Ontario, in 1959, where they raised their three children: Alec (Gina Daroza), Lori (Peter Larsen), and Carole (John Stead). Pearl’s adventurous spirit and curiosity about the world never waned. Over many summers, she and Len packed up the family trailer and set off on countless adventures across North America. Much to Len’s occasional dismay, in the days before car electronics, Pearl and the children sang their way through 48 states, nine provinces, and two territories. They also shared many memorable family ski trips throughout North America. Pearl never hesitated to embrace new challenges, explore new places, or learn something new—a love of adventure she passed on to each of her children.
Most of Pearl’s teaching career was spent at Sheridan Technical School and Sudbury Secondary School, where she left a lasting impact on students both inside and outside the classroom. Some remained in touch with her throughout her life. When the family relocated to Parry Sound in 1982, Pearl exchanged her teaching role for a position as a social worker with the Child and Family Centre. Later, she returned to education through a Ministry of Education pilot program at the Parry Sound Jail, helping inmates earn their high school diplomas. Regardless of her role, Pearl saw the potential in everyone and guided students, families, and individuals with compassion, patience, and respect.
In retirement, Pearl continued to serve her community with the same energy and dedication that defined her professional life. She served on the Mental Health and Addiction Treatment Board, supported The Arthritis Society, and was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Women’s League. Alongside Len, she helped organize and participate in Dragon Boat races, street hockey tournaments, and ALS fundraising walks. In recognition of their extraordinary commitment to community service, Pearl and Len were both honoured as recipients of the Rotary Paul Harris Award in 2014. Pearl was also an avid reader who treasured the friendships and lively discussions shared with her book club.
Eventually, Pearl and Len traded their trailer for a boat aptly named Skools Out. Summers were spent exploring the beauty of Georgian Bay with family and friends and enjoying rounds of golf at the local Parry Sound course. While they loved to travel the world during the off-season — often alongside lifelong friends and family — Parry Sound always remained home. Some of their happiest moments were spent together on the porch, sharing a beer and watching the sunset over the bay.
Of all her joys in retirement, none brought Pearl greater happiness than her grandchildren: Sean, Troy, Katelyn, and Ella. She and Len rarely missed a school concert, music recital, gymnastics meet, rock-climbing competition, or graduation. They were their grandchildren’s biggest fans and most devoted supporters.
Above all else, “Pearlie Gates” was a devoted mother who always put family first. She was the loving, steady presence in a family of strong personalities—the calming voice, the gentle guide, and the one who could always set things right when life became turbulent. Her wisdom, patience, and unconditional love anchored her family and were a source of great comfort.
Pearl lived a full, generous, and meaningful life. She touched countless people, inspired many more, and leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, service, compassion, and adventure.
The family would like to thank the staff at Lakeland Long Term Care facility for their kindness, care, and compassion in helping to make Pearl’s final days as comfortable as possible.

A Funeral Mass to celebrate Pearl’s life will be held on Friday, July 3, at 10:00 a.m., at St. Peter the Apostle Church, Parry Sound. A reception will follow in the church hall.
For those wishing to honour Pearl’s love of golf, the Parry Sound Golf and Country Club has reserved 28 spots on July 3, with tee times beginning at 2:40 p.m. To reserve a spot, please call (705) 342-5262. Those who do not golf are warmly invited to join us on the clubhouse patio as we gather to share stories, raise a glass, and celebrate the life of this remarkable woman.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Pearl’s honour may be made to The Alzheimer Society, or The West Parry Sound Health Centre Foundation (supporting both the hospital and Lakeland Long-Term Care Services in Parry Sound).

My heart goes out to the Yauk family. Pearl and Len were our most treasured friends. I know my late wife Sylvia is with them now and I’m sure I’m missing many special memories and laughs. They don’t make people like the Yauks any more.

To the Yauk family and friends I would like to express my condolences for the loss of Pearl. There will be friends and family that have gone on ahead waiting for her at the Gates of Heaven, but there will be one individual with flowers and an Ice cream cone to continue where they left off. My relationship with Pearl and Len Yauk goes back to 1959, when I started high school at Nickel District Collegiate, their first year of teaching in Sudbury. Len was to be my Phys-Ed teacher for the next 5 years. I heard about your mother, Pearl, from good friends who attended Sudbury High School and who spoke so highly of your mother, as their English teacher.
In 1982, our acquaintance was renewed in Parry Sound, where I had been teaching since 1970. Len was now my boss and I had many occasions of working with him as the French Consultant and then head of the French Immersion program, which he was instrumental in getting established. I had many occasions to interact with your gracious and very kind mother at social functions. We often ended up talking about those formative years in Sudbury.
Your father and I worked together to get the PS Health Centre funded and built. He as Chair of the Hospital Board and I as the Reeve (Mayor of McDougall) and as a municipal rep on the board. I had many occasions to interact with your mother during those years. She was always so interested and supportive of what was happening on that front.
Upon our retirement, we had many occasions to interact at the “Fogies” retirement activities. As always, Pearl was interested in knowing what my children were doing.
I have known your mother, on a personal level for almost 45 years. She was such a gracious, bright and interested lady. I know both she and her mate, your father, will be greatly missed, especially by you, her family. May God grant you His peace at this very sad time of your lives.

Although it must be extremely hard to lose both your wonderful parents within such a short time, it must give you some comfort to know that this special couple, who shared such a long and happy life together, are reunited again. I have great memories of Pearl. We were on the Addiction Outreach Board together and in the same book club. She often talked about the wonderful travels she and Len had and about her kids and grandkids and how proud she was of their accomplishments. She was a classy, caring friend with an infectious smile. Garry and I were so shocked and saddened to hear the pearls passing. Just reading all the condolences from friends and family. You can see that she was one wonderful person. we met on Parry Sound golf course and found out we had a that we had a mutual interest in Arizona. We started meeting once a year and getting together for meals and golfing. We also golfed with them in Perry sound and I was there a few times for a tournament and she always had a bed for me and a bottle of wine that we would sit out on the deck and enjoy..
